Frances Hamilton
My childhood memories are deeply rooted in family friendships and suburban 1950’s culture. Happy summers were spent on 3 of NH beautiful lakes: Newfound, Winnipesaukee, and Squam. I carry embedded Images of birch trees, climbing over rocks, and boat docks hiding big water spiders. The sketchbook drawings included here are from a family camp that preserved a tradition and an aesthetic through many generations. The old wooden chairs, screen porches, card tables, and board games are worth honoring. As an adult I am attracted to the same toys, games & books that kept us busy as children, along with nostalgic miniatures, quilt scraps and antique puzzles. These attic treasures are easy enough to find in New England flea markets and antique stores, which I have frequented with my family for decades. As an avid memory collector I have made puzzle blocks that are an homage to paper covered Victorian picture stories sometimes found in estate sales. I like breaking an image apart and physically finding how the pieces connect. The subjects have settled into categories like plants, animals, and architecture. I find exciting connections in these things that highlight their differences.
