SOPHIA NICOLAY:  An Exhibit in Three Parts: Stuck, Burst and Stamp People at Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery

To open the summer season we present the wonderfully creative work of Sophia Nicolay.  Join us on June 15th from 5 to 7 p.m. for the opening reception.  Nicolay presents a varied exhibit that includes three series of work:  Burst Series, Stuck Series and Stamp People series. Innovative, amusing, unusual and exact the drawings, and stamp collection collages are worth the trip to Sandwich.
Postage People #4
Stamp People #4, collage on paper, image 5 x 3 inches.
Nicolay’s own words best describe her work:

Stamp People are a series of collages that “juxtapose the visual language of advertising and gossip magazines with the formal imagery of postage stamps. New and irreverent meanings emerge as the interpretive frames of material consumerism and the stoic self-representation of state collide.”

“Stuck series explores the balance between precision and chaos, and between substance and non-substance.  The forms evoke strings and pins, which normally fasten and bind materials together, but here they constitute objects in their own right.  This draws attention to the everyday objectifications by which we perceive things where there are only components."

Burst Series:  “These prints are a study in temporality and change. They capture the moments just before, during and after the explosion of large and small ink bubbles. The series explores the fragility of form, as the bubbles are destroyed and find their final resting place on the paper.”
Stuck, 3, abstract line drawing
Stuck, 3, abstract line drawing 3, ink on paper. 42 x 32 inches.
Sophia Nicolay was raised in Sandwich, NH.  When she was young her parents introduced her to drawing, clay and photography, which nurtured her interest in art. She accompanied them to exhibits in Boston and New York. She studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and later at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.  She has also attended residencies and fellowships at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in Arizona.  Her work has been exhibited in New York and in Michigan.  She lives with her family in Amsterdam.

    MOMENTS
    Photographs by Tom Wilson

    CENTER SANDWICH, NH,  July 1, 2019 -
Tom Wilson’s photographs are immediately engaging.  Sensitive, evocative, and compelling are words that come to mind to describe his work.  In his exhibit, Moments, Wilson takes us on a personal journey into the lives of everyday people and special places.  His camera captures a unique moment in time in that fragile second it takes to click the shutter. Please join us for the opening reception on Saturday, July 6th from 5 to 7 p.m. at Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery, 69 Maples Street in Center Sandwich.  Meet Tom Wilson and learn about his journey from Brownie Hawkeye to digital camera.  Gallery hours are from 10 to 5 Tuesday through Saturday and 12 to 5 on Sunday and Monday.  For more information visit us at www.patricialaddcaregagallery.com  or call us at 603 284 7728.

Tom Wilson’s interest in photography began when he was a youth growing up in Minnesota.  Snapping shots with his Brownie, he also learned to develop his own images.  During his career years his photographs tended toward family vacations but in 2009 after moving to Center Sandwich his nascent interest in photography blossomed once again. Wilson’s vision in his words is “To share what I see through the camera and thereby make connections, real and imagined between the viewer and the people, communities and lands that I have had the privilege to visit”

Wilson is thankful to a small group of mentors for their guidance and encouragement.  He has spent time traveling with as well as learning from them.   He still considers his photography a work in progress.
