BRANCHING OUT
Two trees wrapping around each other, one a maple the other a birch, looking so intimate I had to title this The Hug. These two had grown together after their long years together, holding onto each other and some rocks to keep from falling into the Saco River. Their trunks had grafted at the center and their roots curled around each other in such a way that it was hard to tell which tree they belonged to. Nature’s love story of two old souls embracing.
CHILL
In several Southern African cultures the Southern Ground hornbill is considered a harbinger of change or rain. they call loudly as rain approaches.. Chill is the feeling one gets when warned of a storm to come.
Imagery inspired by the northwestern cultural tale of the original relationship
between dogs and humans.
between dogs and humans.
EXTREMES
The image reflects our current state of uncertainty for our future. The multiple boats suggest that we are not alone but must work together yet separated during the pandemic to reach a unified goal of a more "normal" world.

“When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water,”
from THE PEACE OF WILD THINGS
a poem by Wendell Berry

Today, life is extreme. Our daily lives have transformed in so many ways, leading to the great anxieties over simple, human interactions. In one recent such interaction, a painting student, struggling to mix color while working on a landscape painting, asked me, “What is the color of sky?” The question lingered in my mind while driving home at sunset, clouds parting over the waters in Bristol, revealing intense color of extreme beauty. This painting is my best response I could come up with at the time.
"Loss" feels "extremely" sad to me, and also feels fitting for our current time.

"This is the Place" feels to me to exist in a barely real, ethereal space, while simultaneously feeling grounded, this dichotomy seems "extreme":) to me.
The Handmaid's Tale was ranked 37 on the ALA's 1990-1999 list of the 100 most frequently challenged books. The novel has faced steady challenges since it was first published in 1985. The ongoing battle for control over women's reproductive rights which this dystopian novel describes continues today.

The Superb Bird of Paradise lives deep in great forest on islands off the coast of
Indonesian west Papua New Guinea . The male’s throat steamed as he called, and then the female arrived and they danced along a mossy log. |
" In this challenging time hope is hard to find. This image reflects an act of kindness and forward thinking I wish for all families"

Extremely Delicate. Simple and exquisite in form and venation, nature creates extraordinary beauty.

Extremely Unique. Ginkgo biloba: The fan-like leaves of this tree are unlike any other in the landscape, and the tree itself is truly impressive. A few trees even survived the nuclear blast at Hiroshima and are still alive today. Fossils have shown the tree lived over 300 million years ago. Understandably, the ginkgo has become a symbol for strength, longevity and hope.

"This print was inspired by an ancient apple tree on our farm that is being strangled by extremely tenacious bittersweet vines."
